This is Impeachment 101:
There are 435 people in the house of representatives and all of those people are split up into various committees.
The recent Impeachment hearings were done by the House Intelligence Committee – 23 people – 13 Democrats and 10 Republicans – the chair or leader of the committee was Adam Schiff.
STEP ONE OF IMPEACHMENT: The House Intelligence Committee writes up a report of evidence from hearings and depositions and they pass that report off to The House Judiciary Committee.
STEP TWO OF IMPEACHMENT:
The House Judiciary Committee is 41 people – 24 Democrats and 17 Republicans – it might look like an imbalance of Democrats but the committee has to consist of the exact proportion of Democrats to Republican in the entire House of 435 people.
The House Judiciary Committee reads the report from the House Intelligence Committee and decides whether to prepare actual Articles of Impeachment to vote on.
STEP THREE OF IMPEACHMENT:
The whole house votes on the Articles of Impeachment created by the House Judiciary Committee. A simple majority is required for it to pass to the Senate.
STEP FOUR of IMPEACHMENT:
The Senate holds a trial based on the Articles of Impeachment. The Chef Justice of our Supreme Court – which is John Roberts right now, will preside over this trial.
STEP FIVE OF IMPEACHMENT:
The senate votes. In order to convict the president for crimes in the Articles of Impeachment, Two Thirds of the Senate has to agree and the president is removed from office.
I’m Gina Fant-Simon – and this is the Two Minute Take – thanks for watching.
