TRANSCRIPT:
I believe in New Year’s Resolutions.
They kinda set the tone for a year of good vibes and good intentions…
And we need all the good vibes and good intentions we can get this coming year.
Because we need to be emotionally prepared for what’s coming…
I don’t know about you but I feel completely overwhelmed and conflicted and angry and freaked and just astounded by what’s happening right now.
I recently started really paying attention to politics for the first time in my life and my more politically minded friends tell me that the world has always been this fucked up and I just haven’t been paying attention
but I don’t believe that
I think we’re going through the equivalent of an emotional civil war over a president who half see as a con-man creating a swamp while the other half sees him as “the chosen one” draining the swamp.
I’ve never seen anything like it. It is so twilight zone…
We have unlimited access to verifiable facts in the palm of our hands.
But regardless, people are choosing sides instead of choosing facts
People are more invested in not being wrong than actually pursuing what is factually right
It makes my head spin 24/7…
I sometimes question why I’m doing this when I get barraged with angry and cruel comments.
I’m surprised and disappointed to see that it’s happening on both sides.
I’ve learned that People, as a whole, are not logically and unemotionally and respectfully presenting their perspectives.
They are slamming each other with sledgehammers and then calling each other “idiots” or worse.
To fix this corrupt mess we’re in, we HAVE to encourage and gently nudge NOT DEMAND people towards non-biased sources
It might be a simple case of educating and empowering people…
I have to remind myself constantly that many people are technologically challenged and maybe don’t know it…
Maybe Facebook is the only technological connection they have to the world.
Can we present facts in a way that doesn’t shame Trump supporters or make them wrong or make them even angrier.
I know sometimes I feel like I’m trying to talk to someone with their fingers in their ears saying “la la la” and it’s infuriating and almost impossible to be patient and kind…
But – I had a thought…
Haven’t we all had, at some point in our lives put our blind faith, HEART and SOUL into someone who let us down?
I have and when I finally realized the truth on my own, it sucked.
I was crushed and ashamed and it would have been 1000 times worse if everyone around me was calling me a stupid asshole…
So, for 2020, let’s try to think of Trump supporters as human beings, like us, who make mistakes and put their faith in the wrong people sometimes.
For the New Years Resolution – do this with me ok?
Repeat after me:
I resolve to TRY to speak to Trump supporters with kindness and patience and compassion.
I resolve to TRY to put my judgement and anger and resentment and sometimes righteousness aside and try to present facts in a kinder and gentler way.
And if or when people put their fingers in their ears and go “la la la”, I won’t stand there and yell at them.
I resolve to do my homework and fact check and use my vote for Republicans or Democrats or Independents who stand up for Facts over Fiction and Integrity over Party.
I’m Gina Fant-Simon – Happy New year and thanks for listening.
Leave a kind New Year’s message and I will send you a free Integrity over Party T-Shirt. Then shoot me an email at gina@twominutetake.org and let me know you want one and what size. Thanks again
